ABOUT

Sumatran coffee has built a reputation for being deep, dark, and brooding, thanks to the way it’s often roasted—pushed well into the dark roast spectrum until the natural character of the beans takes a backseat to smoky intensity. But here’s the thing: Sumatra doesn’t have to taste like that.
Like all of our coffees, we specialize in light roasts, and this one is no different. Our approach to Tano Batak lets the sweetness, smoothness, and complexity of these beans shine, revealing a whole new side of Sumatra. Grown by smallholder farmers in the Lintong region, near the volcanic highlands of Lake Toba, this coffee is processed using wet hulling ("giling basah"), a method unique to Indonesia that contributes to its signature full body and low acidity.
The result? A cup that’s still bold and rich, but without the heavy-handed bitterness often associated with Sumatran coffee. Instead, you’ll find layers of dark chocolate and cedar, followed by an earthy spice and a lingering sweetness that transforms as it cools.
This is Sumatra reimagined—not roasted into submission, but carefully developed to highlight the depth and nuance hidden beneath the surface. Whether brewed as a vibrant pour-over, a syrupy French press, or a balanced espresso, Tano Batak is proof that even the boldest coffees can have grace, complexity, and a whole lot of character.
